Born in Seattle, Washington, Macklemore, (real name: Ben Haggerty), became interested in hip-hop when he was in elementary school. He began writing his own raps when he was in middle school, and released his first EP when he was seventeen years old. Five years later, he self-released his first full-length album, and then released a mixtape in 2009. Issues related to substance abuse plagued him up until 2009, but he got himself back on track. He then went on to collaborate with Ryan Lewis. They released their first full-length album, “The Heist” in October 2012. The album has been massively successful, and debuted at #1 on the iTunes charts and at #2 on the Billboard charts.
