Summer is almost upon us. And looking at the releases lined up for May, we are going to have some serious tunes to kick off the season. Here at Roc4Life, we have pondered hard and deliberated even harder over what we think the top five new releases of the month will be and with limited hip-hop releases this month, we have a mixed bag of albums for you to check out.

So here you have it folks, five albums guaranteed to be on repeat in our offices and trust us when we say there is a bit of something on this list for everyone.

5. B.o.B – Strange Clouds (May 1st)
Bobby Ray’s sophomore album is tipped by critics to live up to his debut offering. But will we be as content with this album as we were with his debut? The album features an extensive supporting cast that includes Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, and B.o.B turns to Jim Jonsin and Dr. Luke for the bulk of the music on Strange Clouds. This leads us to believe that we will be as satisfied with this as we were with the debut that made him a star.

4. Santigold – Master of My Make-Believe (May 1st)
Hard to believe that it’s been four years since Santi White dropped her debut album. Back for the second time, she teams up with long time collaborators, Diplo and Switch on Master of My Make-Believe for this highly charged eclectic fusion of tracks, defying genre specifications.

3. Damon Albarn – Dr. Dee (An English Opera)  (May 7th)
More known these days for his involvement with The Gorillaz, Damon Albarn, the Blur front man experiments with opera in this endeavor. Not for everyone but be guaranteed if Albarn is involved it is something pretty special.

2. Gossip – A Joyful Noise (May 14th)
Beth Ditto and crew team up with Mark Ronson and Xenomania’s Brian Higgins for their fifth studio album. Focusing on big voices, something Ronson definitely doesn’t shy away from when working in the studio,  Ditto allegedly embraced all her musical inspirations when working on this album. And listening to the lead off single from the album, Perfect World, A Joyful Noise will be just that.

1. Travis Porter – From Day 1  (May 29th)
Not to be confused with the similar sounding Blink 182 drummer who is as prominent on hip-hop tracks as he is behind a drum kit these days. This Georgia trio have been doing the rounds since 2009 on the mixtape circuit but From Day 1 is their first official release through RCA. Not exactly the most lyrical of albums but laced with infectious beats Travis Porter that will have heads nodding in no time.

[Ed’s note:  Chris Brown’s album was on the original list, but it got pushed back so we had to replace it. Sorry, Breezy fans.]
